Last month, while school was out for spring break, a severe overnight storm caused significant flooding at Cayuga Heights Elementary School (CHES). The flooding impacted much of the building’s first floor, including classrooms, the library, and the main office. In the days that followed, staff and facilities teams worked quickly to clean, assess, and prepare learning spaces for students’ return.

Despite the physical damage to the building, school resumed as planned following spring break with no interruption to learning. The successful transition was made possible by the dedication and coordination of CHES staff, who prepared alternative learning spaces to support students’ academic and social-emotional needs.

“The CHES team demonstrated extraordinary commitment in ensuring that students could return to a stable, supportive environment,” Superintendent Dr. Luvelle Brown shared. “I am especially grateful to Principal Aileen Grainger’s steady leadership and the collaborative spirit of the entire staff throughout this process.”

Throughout the return to school, the focus remained on maintaining a sense of normalcy. Students arriving in new classroom spaces were greeted with personalized touches, including student photos displayed on the walls, nametags placed by new backpack hooks, and classroom setups designed to support familiar routines.

Educators also dedicated time for students to process their experiences, share age-appropriate information, and discuss how to remain welcoming and respectful in shared spaces that now include additional classmates.

At the same time, academic routines have remained consistent. Instruction continued in alignment with the curriculum, and state testing proceeded as scheduled. Music, art, and instrumental lessons also continued without disruption.

These efforts reflect the strength of the Cayuga Heights Elementary community and a shared commitment to ensuring students experience consistency, care, and high-quality instruction, even in the face of disruption.

“CHES students have shown incredible character and resiliency through the unexpected changes to our school year,” Principal Grainger said. “I am grateful for the unwavering dedication and commitment shown by all members of the CHES community.”
