On January 5, scholars at Beverly J. Martin (BJM) Elementary School returned from an almost two-week winter break to a full-day Tiger Community Day focused on strengthening relationships and reinforcing schoolwide expectations. The day intentionally pressed pause on “business as usual,” providing space for scholars and staff to reconnect and re-center as the school community transitioned back into learning.

The school also took a moment to reflect on the life and legacy of Beverly J. Martin, whose birthday on January 3rd serves as a reminder of the core values that define the BJM community. Her vision for an inclusive, excellent, and connected school continues to inspire the work being done each day at BJM.

The day began with a schoolwide Morning Meeting that welcomed scholars back and reviewed the Tiger Expectations and T.I.G.E.R. values: Tenacious, Inclusive, Grateful, Empowered, and Respectful. Scholars reflected on what these values look, sound, and feel like in their daily school experiences, helping reestablish shared expectations and Tiger Pride.

Throughout the day, classes participated in community-building activities led by staff members across the school. These rotations emphasized teamwork, creativity, and connection. A dedicated classroom community block allowed teachers and scholars to revisit class charters and reaffirm their commitments to one another. Highlights included:

  • Cooking lessons

  • Board games

  • Yoga

  • STEAM activities

  • Intro to instruments

  • Learn a dance

  • Intro to Spanish

  • Obstacle course

  • Snowflake design

Tiger Community Day prioritized connection and joy, helping rebuild the school community after the winter break and setting a positive tone for the weeks ahead. This collaborative approach reflects ICSD’s commitment to meaningful, interdisciplinary learning experiences.
