Tompkins County Assessment Department Updates

February 2024

Important Upcoming Dates

  • February 23 – 2024 Preliminary Assessment Roll Posted

  • April 12 – Last day to submit informal assessment review

  • May 1 – Tentative Assessment Roll Filed

  • May 28 – Grievance Day

Most exemption applications are due by March 1, 2024. If you are receiving the Basic STAR exemption and will turn 65 in 2024 (and your 2022 income is under $98,700), please make sure that you apply for the Enhanced STAR exemption by March 1, 2024.

Tompkins County is in a very active real estate market with a low supply of inventory which has caused prices to increase more dramatically than probably any other time in our history (at least in the last 30 years).  If and when real estate values decline, the department will be more than willing to decrease assessments.

There are a few ways for a property owner to file a review.  The first is to call the Department of Assessment at 607-274-5516.  The next way is to file an online application and upload supporting documentation.  And finally, on the back of the Impact Notice is the paper application that a property owner can fill out and return to the office.

  • Make sure numerical and written amount on check match, and check is signed.

  • Be sure to include bill or copy of bill with payment.

  • If mailing your tax payment, be sure to follow up to assure your payment was received by the district and your bill is paid. Check your bank account to make sure your check has cleared and/or check the payment status of your bill at taxlookup.net.

  • If you wait until the last day to mail your payment, it is recommended that you send your payment via certified mail/return receipt.

Common Errors Made on Tax Payments

  • Error: Check is not signed.

Result: check is returned to the maker and the tax bill remains unpaid.

  • Error: Numeric and written amount on check don't match

Result: bank will not process check. Check is returned to the maker and the tax bill remains unpaid.

  • Error: Amount paid included a penalty that was not due at the time of payment

Result: bank will not process check. Check is returned to the maker and the tax bill remains unpaid.

  • Error: Amount paid does not include the penalty due

Result: amount due depends on the date the payment is made. If payment is made in person at the bank, the date the payment is received at the bank teller’s window is considered the date of payment. If a tax payment is mailed, the date of the official postmark on the envelope is considered the date of payment. If the amount submitted is not the amount due on the date of payment, which would include any penalties due on that date, the check is returned to the maker with notification of underpayment and the tax bill remains unpaid.

  • Error: Payment was mailed but never received by the district (lost in the mail)

Result: Payment is considered late and all penalties apply, as per NYS Tax Law.
