South Hill Shining Star Credit Union

The South Hill Student Credit Union has been running its own hands-on savings program since November 2013. The goal of the program is to provide early financial education through experiential learning for ALL interested students.

The South Hill Shining Star Savings Team consists of a family volunteer and a South Hill staff member who are both trained as tellers. The credit union is open every Wednesday, 7:30-8 a.m. in the South Hill Elementary Cafeteria. Each shining star student learns “hands-on” by opening a real savings account under his/her name. From school they can make weekly deposits into their accounts, which are held at Alternatives Federal Credit Union. Each student gets the opportunity to form a savings habit by bringing in a deposit week after week after week. The amount saved is irrelevant – any amount each week supports developing a saving habit! Shining star students fill out a deposit slip and save through practice regardless of the amount.

Please feel free to have your student join the credit union at any time. If your student already has an account, please feel free to have them make a deposit every Wednesday at school!

We look forward to seeing your shining star student make deposits on Wednesdays!!!!
