Message from Superintendent Brown Regarding District Safety Plans: February 15, 2018   Dear Families, Students, and Staff,   In light of the terrible incident yesterday in Florida, I wish to update you on the Ithaca City School District’s continuous efforts to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. Music for Unity and Social Change: In January, students at Fall Creek and Beverly J. Martin elementary schools learned how the power of music can inspire diversity and the embracing of differences.   Members of the Honey Child Soul Quintet have been working with 4 th and 5 th graders during weekly workshops that tie world music, movement, and mindfulness into their social studies curriculum.   The Music for Unity and Social Chance program kicked off with assemblies at both schools, which were open to all students. ... more >>
Bee-Bots: Some of the ICSD’s youngest students are learning how to code with the help of Bee-Bots. Several classes have used the small, beginner-level robots to learn the basics of coding, including counting, sequencing, estimation, and problem-solving.   Children press directional buttons to program the Bee-Bot to move forward, left or right, six inches at a time. Families in the ICSD Farm to Table Program Broke Bread to Cap Off a Successful First Year: A celebratory harvest dinner at Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) brought over 100 students and their families out for a night of learning, bonding, and trying a variety of fresh foods made by program participants and local restaurants.   During the dinner, students showed off projects they’d completed based around the farm-to-table concept, including “good food guides,” posters, and mobiles. The ICSD Farm to Table Program: This past spring, the Ithaca City School District was awarded a grant from the New York State Education Department to support a Farm to Table (FTT) summer and afterschool program. The ICSD FTT provides a contextualized, interdisciplinary, hands-on study of food, nutrition, gardening, and cooking.
