IHS Senior Wins National Merit Scholarship
|Simratpal (Sammy) Deol, a current senior at Ithaca High School, has been awarded a National Merit $2500 Scholarship.
Deol, who will major in biomedical sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the fall, is one of only 2,500 “Merit Scholars” named in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Not only was Deol selected to RIT's Honors Program, but he has also been accepted to the Upstate Accelerated Scholars (UAS) Program in conjunction with Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. Through UAS, Deol is guaranteed a spot at Upstate Medical University in Fall 2026, where he will pursue his medical degree.
"Since I dream of becoming a physician, I'm definitely excited to begin that process here in Upstate New York," Deol said.
The 2022 Merit Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, and are the competition finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
Last October's PSAT/NMSQT served as an initial screen of program entrants, with the 17,000 highest-scoring participants in each state -- representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors -- named as semifinalists. Of those, some 16,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance as finalists, and only 2,500 were ultimately selected as winners.
