ICSD Band, Choir, and Theatre Moving to 3 Feet of Physical Distancing

November 3, 2021

Greetings,

We have been grateful for the tremendous work of our students and staff who have closely followed our health and safety measures. After closely monitoring the protocols and COVID-19 mitigation methods in our school district, along with maintaining ongoing communication with the Tompkins County Health Department (TCHD) and our regional school districts, we have embraced another change to our COVID-19 protocols.

Starting on Monday, November 8, 2021, band, choir, and theatre will move from 6 feet to 3 feet of physical distancing. A number of factors have contributed to this change. Perhaps most importantly, several of the component districts in our TST BOCES Region initiated 3 feet of distancing for these activities at the beginning of the school year, and yet the TCHD has put out the following statement, from this linked article

“Good news on the transmission front, particularly related to pre-K through [12th grade],” Kruppa said. “We’re now a month into the school year and all of our districts have been touched with cases, but we’re not seeing transmission in the schools that we can definitively say is [in-school] transmission.”

Additionally, our school district has begun screening testing, and will be testing at each school weekly, beginning on November 8, 2021. Screening testing allows us to swiftly identify asymptomatic cases of COVID-19, and helps the TCHD to place COVID-positive individuals into quarantine immediately.

We will of course continue mask-wearing for student performers and instruments when indoors or out, and to remind individuals to stay home when sick and send them home when presenting symptoms at school, practice good hand and respiratory hygiene, maintain our improved HVAC and filtration systems, implement the State mandate to require all staff to submit weekly test results or show proof of vaccination, and ensure we’re adhering to our cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

Thank you for your continued support of our students and staff.

Take care,
ICSD Communications
