ICSD Masking Update

June 6, 2021

Greetings ICSD Community,

I am writing to share information related to health and safety protocols in our schools. On Friday evening, the New York State Department of health (NYSDOH) wrote an open letter to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) expressing their intent to no longer require mask wearing in schools. While not requiring mask wearing, the NYSDOH still strongly encourages the safety precaution inside school buildings. Furthermore, the NYSDOH letter communicates that school districts could continue to require mask wearing. The New York State mask wearing rule changes will go into effect on Monday, June 7, 2021 unless the CDC provides the NYSDOH data that will suggest a different approach.

In the Ithaca City School District, we will continue to require mask wearing indoors, with continued exceptions for eating, drinking, and mask breaks. When outdoors, individuals no longer need to be masked.

Our community has done an exceptional job of containing the spread of COVID-19. Although our transmission rates are low, we still have many unvaccinated community members. The continuation of mask wearing in schools allows for our continued support of students and adults in our school buildings.

I appreciate you, and I wish you well as we enjoy these last few weeks of the academic school year.

Regards,
Luvelle
