Mae Conuel, a senior at Ithaca High School, has been awarded a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship.

Mae, who will study computer science at the University of Central Florida in the fall, is one of only 2,500 scholarship winners chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, and are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2018 with the PSAT/NMSQT serving as an initial screen of program entrants. The 16,000 highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named semifinalists. Of those, 15,000 students met the very high academic standards and other requirements to advance as finalists.
