Project Title: The Memory Project
Class(s): Drawing and Painting
Subject(s): Art integrated with History, Politics, Culture
Project: Ithaca High School students participate in “The Memory Project.” This project connects students with the a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. This is an opportunity to creatively practice kindness and global awareness.
Students research the country's history, traditions, culture and politics. We want the portraits to help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. IHS students work with full-page color prints as well as digital copies of those photos, to create the finished portraits. This project is supported by funds from the Fine Arts Booster Group. For 2016-17, the portraits will be of, and for, children from Syria.
Standards: National Core Arts Standards
Service Learning: Portraits created by the Ithaca High School students are presented to children by “The Memory Project” a charitable organization.
