“We Dream of a World” Calendars on Sale Dec. 18

The Ithaca community is invited to witness creativity and imagination coming together at Belle Sherman Elementary School with the “We Dream of a World” calendar. For the 2017 calendar, 20 first-graders from the Butterfly Room worked together to create a full color calendar that combines their art and essays. All proceeds from the calendar will be donated to UNICEF Syria and Heifer International.

The “We Dream of a World” calendar uses the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child as their backdrop for the calendar. While creating the calendar, students discussed basic rights – such as shelter, education, access to clean water, and healthcare – and examined the impact these rights have on the lives of children around the world. The "We Dream of a World" calendar aims to promote compassion, kindness, tolerance, and diversity among all people.

“In assembling this calendar, we expressed our dreams and aspirations for basic human rights through our art and writing,” said Emily Graw, a first grade teacher at Belle Sherman Elementary School. “We recognized that although aspects of our lives may be different from other children in the world, everyone deserves the rights embodied in the United Nations Convention, no matter their gender, skin color, ethnicity, or wealth.”

The Butterfly Room first-graders hope that the “We Dream of a World” calendar will help to further spread their message of promoting basic human rights. In addition to this, proceeds from calendar sales will help the group make a donation to Heifer International and UNICEF Syria, both of which strive to implement these basic human rights.

The “We Dream of a World” calendars will be available starting December 18. Calendars can be purchased by order form, with a requested $5 minimum donation. Students will also be selling the calendars in the Greenstar lobby on December 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., January 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and January 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
