Boynton Presents "My Gypsy Robe" & "The Cave" This Weekend

Boynton Middle School Presents
"My Gypsy Robe" & "The Cave" by Tim Kelly

Boynton Middle School Drama is proud to present “My Gypsy Robe” & “The Cave”: Two one-act plays by Tim Kelly. “My Gypsy Robe” is an intriguing story about a magical robe that is given to a young actress who is making her debut. “The Cave” is an off-beat exercise in total theatre where the cast enters wondering what they are about to perform. Opting to create life in a dark cave, they are threatened by fear of the unknown. A decision must be made: stay or leave?

The productions are being directed by Lorraine Tino, a teacher at Ithaca High School. “Both plays are about theatre companies – one is what happens back stage and the other is a theatre company in search of meaning,” Tino explains. “They each deal with fear and taking risks in different humorous ways.” She chose material that would encourage the middle school students to expand their talents and creativity on stage. “We’ve talked a lot about focus, but also symbolism because “The Cave” is very metaphorical,” says Tino. “They’ve learned how to make acting decisions that are based on a deeper understanding of the play while working within a large ensemble of both experienced and beginning performers. These are challenging shows and the audience will be amazed by the energy, enthusiasm and amusement these kids bring to the stage.”

Performances are Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 at 7pm, and Sunday, May 15 at 2 pm in the McCalmon Theatre at Boynton Middle School, 1601 N. Cayuga Street, Ithaca, NY 14850. Tickets sold in BMS cafeteria the week of the show and at the door. $8 for everyone.
