Boynton Middle School proudly brings Disney’s “The Lion King Jr” to the stage of the McCalmon Theatre for five performances in December. The show features an incredibly talented cast directed by Boynton’s award-winning performing-arts faculty.
“The Lion King Jr” is a lively adaptation of Julie Taymor’s internationally celebrated and critically acclaimed Broadway musical based on Disney’s beloved 1994 animated film. This is the tale of Simba, a young lion prince living in the flourishing African Pride Lands with his friend, Nala, and the journey he takes as he comes of age and fights a formidable enemy to fulfill his destiny to be king. Featuring a wide-ranging cast of well known characters, including the majestic Mufasa; dastardly Scar; and the beloved comedic duo of Timon & Pumbaa, this vibrant show brings traditional African styles & rhythms to life at Boynton. The score features the unforgettable music written by Elton John and Tim Rice - including “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” - plus new striking tracks by Lebo M., Mark Mancina, and Hans Zimmer, which will have the audience dancing in their seats.
The importance of family, friendship, and courage is explored with humor and emotion in this entertaining and electrifying musical. Condensed for youthful players and audiences, Boynton’s “The Lion King Jr” is perfect for families with children of all ages. “The Lion King Jr” is a story of love and redemption that captivates its audience through spirited and dynamic singing and dancing - combined with heaps of laughter and vivid dramatics.
Evening performances take place Thursday, December 17; Friday, December 18; and Saturday, December 19 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are Saturday, December 19; Sunday, December 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children - general seating with purchase available at the door.
As this is the first year “The Lion King Jr” has been released for school productions, the Boynton Musical is once again breaking new ground. This innovative presentation is a true must see with brilliant direction by Robert Winans, exhilarating musical direction by Nathan Parker, stunning choreography by Gina Amici, and unique costumes by Liz Woods.
