This past Tuesday evening, June 23, 2015, the Ithaca City School District Board of Education extended the contract of Superintendent, Dr. Luvelle Brown, through June 30, 2020. Board President, Robert Ainslie, recognized Dr. Brown’s accomplishments in his four and half years as Superintendent. A rising graduation rate, increased at-grade reading levels, increased participation rates in all co-curricular activities and decreased disproportionality between minority and special education students compared to majority students. “We are committed to providing quality learning opportunities for all our children; each is a valuable member of our 6000 Thinkers” said Dr. Brown.
Dr. Brown’s contract includes no increase in pay. Some adjustments were made to the benefit package. “The lack of a pay increase for a second year is not a measure of Dr. Brown’s performance, but rather recognition by the Superintendent of the continuing economic issues facing the school district,” said Board Member, Eldred Harris.
The Board also extended the contracts for Robert VanKeuren, Director of Human Resources and Amanda Verba, School Business Official. Each contract was extended for one year and included a two percent increase in compensation. Dr. Brown thanked Mr. VanKeuren and Ms. Verba for their continuing service to the District. “The District now has an experienced and more stable senior management team” noted Board Vice President, Chris Malcolm. Malcolm continued, “Stability at the senior level will allow the District to make continued gains in achievement by our students.”
The Board meets next on July 3, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. in the Board Conference Room at Lake Street for its annual re-organization meeting. Three new members will be joining the Board, Jen Curley, Moira Lang and Ann Reichlin.
