About the Library


About DeWitt Middle School Library

DeWitt's library is a center for learning, reading, research, and meetings. The teacher librarian and the library clerk collaborate with staff to provide lessons that include information literacy skills, assist students with book selections and with their information needs for school assignments, and maintain the library facility and collection of more than 13,000 books, magazines, online reference resources and other media.


LIBRARY HOURS

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

 


LIBRARY ACCESS FOR STUDENTS

Students will often come to the library during classes, either being sent individually by the classroom teacher, or as a class coming to the library with the teacher. Other times students may come to the library independently are:

Before school:
  • Sign out from lobby or cafe, get a pass
  • Sign in and present pass in library
  • Stay until time to move to classes
Lunch:
  • After lunch has been eaten, sign out from cafe, get a pass
  • Sign in and present pass in library
  • Stay until time to move to next class
Study Halls and Enrichment: 
  • Get pass from teacher
  • Sign in and present pass in library
  • Stay until end of period or get signed pass from library staff to return to class
After school
  • Come to the library with pass from your Homework Club room
  • Non-Homework Club students may arrange with library staff to stay until 4:30, M, T, TH

 

PLEASE NOTE: We are committed to serving every student, and if a student cannot complete their homework because they are having difficulty getting access to the library, please contact library staff. We will work with anyone to ensure that they have the access that they need.


CHECKOUT OF MATERIALS

  • Anyone in the DeWitt community is welcome to borrow books, periodicals, and other materials.
  • You can borrow up to three items at a time, for a period of three weeks.
  • You may renew items if you need them longer.
  • If you can't find what you're looking for, ask us: we may be able to borrow it from another library through Interlibrary Loan.
  • If a book is lost or damaged, you are expected to pay $5.00 towards replacement of the book.
  • Please recommend books and magazines that you would like to have in your library.

HOW TO BEHAVE IN THE LIBRARY

Expectations: What it looks like:
  • Respect the right of every student to learn and to use the library quietly.
  • Arms-length voices
  • No running or throwing
  • Allow other students to work without distraction
  • Responsibility: come prepared to work on school assignments or read, and ask for help if needed.
  • Be an independent library user
  • Focus on school work and/or reading
  • Bring work with you, so you don't have to leave the library to get it 
  • Safety: the library is a bully-free zone, and every student is welcome.
  • Keep your hands to yourself
  • Any online activity on any device is subject to scrutiny by library staff
  • Use mannerly words (please, thank you, excuse me, etc.)
