CHES Receives Green School Grant

The New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling (NYSAR3) recently awarded Cayuga Heights Elementary School with a $500 Green School Grant to support its composting program with Cayuga Compost.
Cayuga Heights will use the funding to purchase new classroom compost and recycling bins, a cafeteria compost bin, and bin signage to encourage proper waste disposal and reduce contamination. The school will also continue to develop a new volunteer program in which students, staff, and community members serve as cafeteria monitors at mealtimes to teach students proper bin sorting. Cornell University’s Campus Sustainability Office and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County will work with the Cayuga Heights PTA to guide and support the composting efforts.
NYSARestablished the Green School Grant Program in 2005 with the goal of providing funding for public and private schools to develop or rejuvenate recycling and waste reduction programs. The grants are awarded twice yearly and all New York State public and private K-12 schools are eligible to apply. Learn more about NYSAR3’s Green School Grant Program here:
