Six ICSD Educators Selected for NYS Master Teacher Program

Six Ithaca City School District (ICSD) educators were recently selected to join the New York State Master Teacher Program.
Frederick Deppe and Hallie Snowman of Ithaca High School, Regina Kolb and Chris Martin of Lehman Alternative Community School, Jane Koestler of South Hill Elementary School, and Tanya Kszystyniak of Fall Creek Elementary School were among 275 educators from across the state chosen to join the program this year. The recent selections bring the total number of New York State Master Educators from the ICSD to 20.
The Master Teacher Program began in 2013 as a partnership between Governor Andrew Cuomo, the State University of New York (SUNY), and Math for America. The program supports 980 outstanding public school professionals who teach in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This year, one-third of the newly selected Master Teachers announced are elementary teachers, expanding the program to include K-12 STEM educators.
“I’m thrilled that elementary teachers are included in this program and look forward to learning and networking with other passionate STEM educators to strengthen our collective practice,” said Koestler.
In addition to excelling in the classroom, Master Teachers also hold leadership roles in their departments and districts, participate in professional associations, and advise STEM-related clubs and extracurricular activities. The selected Master Teachers have been teaching an average of 15 years.
Throughout their four-year participation in the program, Master Teachers receive a $15,000 annual stipend, engage in professional development opportunities, and work closely with pre-service and early career teachers to foster a supportive environment for the next generation of STEM teachers.
“I’m incredibly excited and honored to be in the NYS Master Teacher Program,” said Kszystyniak. “I look forward to expanding my knowledge in STEM content and pedagogy, collaborating with fellow educators from all over New York State, and sharing my learning with colleagues and students!”
