Ninth-grader Reese Mount will be recognized at the NYSSMA Winter Conference for her outstanding composition for orchestra, “Through the Hidden Tunnel.”
Last year, Reese wrote “Through the Hidden Tunnel” as part of the Boynton Orchestra Young Composers Project, which offers special scholarships for composition to eighth-grade string players. Under the direction of Mark Lewis, the Boynton Chamber Orchestra premiered the piece in May and subsequently performed it at elementary schools and around the community.
Reese submitted “Through the Hidden Tunnel” to NYSSMA’s student composition assessment project. Of the 100 submissions from across the state and by students of all ages, Reese’s was one of only 12 selected for performance at the NYSSMA Winter Conference. On Friday, November 30, the Boynton Chamber Orchestra will once again perform “Through the Hidden Tunnel” at the 20th Annual Young Composers Concert in Rochester, New York.
This is an “amazing example of student engagement in the Fine and Performing Arts program where creativity, mastery, and purpose have been authentically applied,” said Director Daphne Shululu.
