IHS Link Crew

For over a decade, Link Crew has been helping freshmen make successful transitions into Ithaca High School by connecting them with upperclassmen mentors, or Link Leaders.
Students can apply to become Link Leaders beginning their sophomore year,
however, most of the positions are given to juniors and seniors who are more acquainted with the school. To apply, students must submit a form and essay. Those selected are then required to complete a two-day training in August, during which they engage in team-building exercises and hear from special guest speakers.
After their training, the upperclassmen begin connecting with freshmen during Link Crew’s first two events of the school year. In August, Link Crew hosts Freshmen Family Info Night, an opportunity for incoming students and their families to meet and greet staff, gain exposure to different clubs offered at IHS, and learn more about Link Crew.
On Freshmen Orientation Day, Link Leaders welcome the new students to their first day at IHS. Freshmen are randomly assigned to small groups, which are led by one or two Link Leaders. Throughout the day, Link Leaders make sure the members of their crews are getting acclimated to the school and connecting with their peers.
“My favorite part of Link Crew is getting to know each new ninth-grade student in my group on Freshman Orientation Day,” said IHS senior and Link Leader Andrew Kim. “Everyone has a very distinct background, and hearing about their ‘story’ is, more often than not, eye-opening.”
Throughout the rest of the year, Link Leaders work directly with freshmen on academic and social concerns. Meggie New-Schober, who has supervised Link Crew for the last seven years, is quick to point out that the program is almost entirely student-run. Link Leaders meet monthly to brainstorm, vote on, and organize events for the freshmen, such as cookie decorating, freshmen breakfast, “froyo in the foyer,” and tailgates before athletic events.
In addition to offering these social events, Link Leaders assist freshmen academically through mentoring and tutoring services. They also host Cookies and Cram and Cocoa and Cram to help freshmen study for their midterms and finals.
“I think some of the goals of Link Crew are to help incoming freshmen prepare for and become accustomed to high school, providing a helping hand when needed, and to strengthen the Ithaca High School community,” explained Kim. “Many of the events we hold throughout the year, along with personal interactions between Link Leaders and freshmen, in my opinion, contribute towards achieving these goals.”
