DeWitt Ping Pong Club

How does a school build cross-cultural communication and community? At DeWitt Middle School, one way they do it is through ping pong! With the support of an IPEI Teacher Grant awarded to Carol Hoffman (ENL teacher and Ping Pong Club Advisor), DeWitt hosts a monthly ping pong party, open to all ICSD students, families, and community members. The goals of the ping pong project are to bring people together, to increase family engagement in school, and to simply have fun together. It is a great way to create community through an exciting sport that is open to all levels.
On the second Saturday of each month beginning in January, the DeWitt cafeteria will be transformed into a table tennis center, complete with nine full-sized tables, six makeshift tables, a ping pong robot, and a café area with snacks and board games. Typically 50-70 people, ranging in age from two to 76, gather and play. Community partners last year included the Cornell University Table Tennis Club, the BOCES Adult ESL Program, and the Enfield Hole in the Paddle Tennis Club. The Ithaca College Ping Pong Club participates regularly, as do a number of DeWitt parents, students from different schools, and enthusiastic community members.
Mark your calendars for the next Ping Pong Party on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. (and every second Saturday of the month through June). All levels are welcome and paddles will be provided.
Please contact Carol Hoffman ( if you would like to help or if you would like to contribute towards new equipment for the DeWitt Ping Pong Club and this great cross-cultural event!
