"We Dream of a World" 2018 Calendars

The Ithaca community is invited to witness creativity and imagination coming together at Belle Sherman Elementary School with the “We Dream of a World” calendar. For the 2018 calendar, 17 first graders from the Butterfly Room worked together to create a full-color publication that combines their art and essays. All proceeds from the calendar will be donated to Nothing But Nets, UNICEF (for Puerto Rico), and Catholic Charities (Refugee Resettlement Program).

The “We Dream of a World” calendar uses the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a backdrop. While creating the calendar, students discussed basic rights—such as shelter, education, access to clean water, and healthcare—and examined the impact these rights have on the lives of children around the world. The “We Dream of a World” calendar aims to promote compassion, kindness, tolerance, and diversity among all people.

“In assembling this calendar, we expressed our dreams and aspirations for basic human rights through our art and writing,” said Emily Graw, a first grade teacher at Belle Sherman who collaborated with art teacher Sarah Locke-Mountin on the project. “We recognized that although aspects of our lives may be different from other children in the world, everyone deserves the rights embodied in the United Nations Convention, no matter their gender, skin color, ethnicity, or wealth.”
The Butterfly Room first graders hope that the “We Dream of a World” calendar will help spread their message of promoting basic human rights.

The calendars are available starting December 4. They can be purchased by order form, with a requested $5 minimum donation. Students will also be selling the calendars in the Greenstar lobby on December 10, 17, 24, and 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as January 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (The dates closer to the holidays are subject to cancellation.) The calendars are also available downtown at Buffalo Street Books and Sunny Days.
