Message from Superintendent Brown Regarding District Safety Plans: February 15, 2018   Dear Families, Students, and Staff,   In light of the terrible incident yesterday in Florida, I wish to update you on the Ithaca City School District’s continuous efforts to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. DeWitt Ping Pong Club: How does a school build cross-cultural communication and community? At DeWitt Middle School, one way they do it is through ping pong! With the support of an IPEI Teacher Grant awarded to Carol Hoffman (ENL teacher and Ping Pong Club Advisor), DeWitt hosts a monthly ping pong party, open to all ICSD students, families, and community members. How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? by Theresa Souchet: Submitted by Theresa Souchet, DeWitt ENL Teacher. This week, as a result of the devastation from Hurricane Maria, our school received two students from Puerto Rico. As a relatively new staff member at DeWitt, I was deeply impressed and humbled by the action taken by my colleagues to welcome these students. Surviving and Thriving in the Agricultural Revolution: Students in the sixth grade at DeWitt Middle School studied the Agricultural Revolution in a new way this fall. Using a project-based learning approach, they examined the relationship between humans and their physical environment, and worked to share how the characteristics of regions in the Eastern Hemisphere affected the history of societies in that place. IPEI Awards Third Connecting Classrooms Grant: The Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) has awarded its third Connecting Classrooms Grant this year, which will give 150 DeWitt Middle School seventh-graders the opportunity to engage in a mock archeological dig this spring. Boynton Middle School seventh-graders will join the project in fall 2018.   Connecting Classrooms Grants fund large-scale projects that enhance student engagement and support learning consistent with school and district goals.
