ICSD Board of Education Announces Contract Extensions   This past Tuesday evening, June 23, 2015, the Ithaca City School District Board of Education extended the contract of Superintendent, Dr. Luvelle Brown, through June 30, 2020. Board President, Robert Ainslie, recognized Dr. Brown’s accomplishments in his four and half years as Superintendent. A rising graduation rate, increased at-grade reading levels, increased participation rates in all co-curricular activities and decreased disproportionality between minority and special education students compared to majority students. “We are committed to providing quality learning opportunities for all our children; each is a valuable member of our 6000 Thinkers” said Dr. Brown. Dr. Brown’s contract includes no increase in pay.  Some adjustments were made to ... more >>
Record number of school budgets pass in New York ALBANY –  A record 99 percent of school budgets passed in New York on Tuesday, with just eight spending plans rejected — including the Tioga Central School District — the state teachers' union said Wednesday citing preliminary results. Schools were asking voters to approve austere budgets. New York's nearly 700 school districts on Tuesday proposed an average spending increase of 1.9 percent and a tax levy increase of 1.6 percent. Only 18 districts sought to override the property tax cap. The New York State United Teachers union said the 99 percent approval rating surpassed a record of just over 98 percent of budgets passed in 2014 and the approximately 95 percent that won passage in 2013. The union said it had tabulated the results from 566 school ... more >>

INSIDER: Health & Wellness Highlight: Cathy Sinnott Why are you a member of the ICSD team? Sinnott: I was excited to see the school district expand the role of ‘head nurse’ to reflect the responsibility of the school district to look at the health and wellness of all its members. The new position of coordinator of health services and wellness provides oversight to the health of students, staff, and the community. Each group benefits by the health of the others. By honoring this and collaborating with others, we break down silos and create better and healthier ways of learning for our students.   What do you try to accomplish within the first 45 minutes of each school day? Sinnott: Nursing is the type of profession in which things can turn on a dime. A calm, steady day can turn ... more >>
INSIDER: Athletics Highlight: David Hanna What treasures are in ICSD? Hanna:  I truly treasure our coaches and  student-athletes . I am honored to work on their behalf every day. Coaches and  student-athletes  are unique because every week they represent our school in competition - tirelessly for  love of their sport and for each other.  What questions do you have for ICSD students? Hanna:  My question for them would be when you are 60 and look back on your life, what will you be remembered for? Did you live for others? Is your life one worth remembering? Are you a leader or a follower? Hanna:  I'm a leader, leading allows me to magnify and enhance the abilities of others – but, I am proud that I have become ... more >>
INSIDER: Technology Highlight: Zachary Lind What are your strengths? Lind: My greatest strengths are my ability to talk and work with colleagues. I also have a strong understanding of how technology and education intersect. Using these strengths, I plan to continue connecting teachers with the proper technology to support their teaching and the student learning. I have a pretty good sense of humor about most situations, and that allows me to understand and adapt to the evolving technological needs of the district. I try to bridge the gap between technology and education by building strong relationships. I take the time to get to know the people I interact with. My ultimate goal is to make teachers and staff members across the district feel comfortable asking for technological support.   ... more >>

Staff Versus Students Basketball Game Every year Principal Mac Knight and Vice Principal Deborah Rivera make sure staff and eighth-grade students face off on the basketball court at DeWitt. This event is held to celebrate eighth graders moving up to high school while fostering camaraderie with those they’ll be leaving at DeWitt.   This year, eighth-grade student athletes Simon Barley and Graceanne Gorski were chosen to organize and rally peers. The eighth graders arrived rallied and prepared to walk away with yet another win.      “They put up a tough game,” said Teacher Crystal Sessoms. “But we won, the staff won - took the game by two points. Primarily it’s DeWitt staff playing against the students, but historically we’ve lost. So, we ... more >>

Red Carpet Affair: Senior Prom June 11 "I think that this will be a fantastic senior prom," said Ben Monaghan, class president. "We've been in communication with the ICSD bus garage and they're planning on cleaning out the buses and allowing us to decorate them beforehand. The red carpet plan was the student activity director's, Karl Mellander. I think it's a great idea - however, Silver Queen Farm has a lot of decorations already set up such as lanterns and lighting, for example. The theme will likely be a little different at Silver Queen than at Ithaca High School." Senior prom is open to IHS and Lehman Alternative Community School students. It will take place at Silver Queen Farm from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. All students will be required to take the bus from ... more >>
